Next stop, St Eriksplan

(download)

Back on the train, but this time for only 24 hours. We felt a bit unhappy about leaving Mongolia behind, but at the same time we were really looking forward to hit Beijing.

A new train ride meant new companions in our sleeping wagon. After having awesome ones the first time around, we were excited to meet some new globetrotting friends. "Hello, nice to meet you, my name is..." "So, where are you from? Sweden you say?!" and then the four of us started talking Swedish to each other instead. Such a coincidence to meet some fellow countrymen!

The thing is that we actually happened to travel with a Swedish couple (Micke and Caroline) in Jalman, Mongolia as well. As this wasn't enough, they were living at the next metro station back home in Sweden! When we mentioned this to Thomas and New-Caroline on the train... "So Per and Jenny, that means the two of you live in Stockholm?" New-Caroline said with a curious smile, while another Mongolian camel passed us by outside the window. "As the matter a fact we do too". It turned out the four of us not only live in the same country and city... but also at the SAME metro station, just one road away. Crazy world...

To Old-Caroline and New-Caroline with boyfriends, of course you are invited to our homecoming party just a block away. See ya in May!

Bumpy car ride

(download)
Tired and hungry. When we almost got back into Ulaan Baatar after the Yak Trek, there was a car crash blocking the whole road. People went crazy, trying to get trough the little space between the two cars. A policeman finally arrived to the scene to clear things out; he measured the vehicles, the road and painted some beautiful pictures. Felt as it took forever, well it did... Ah, perhaps we should mention the crash was between us and another vehicle! Wasn't our fault though. (Don't worry mommy)

An eulogy

The beloved ones died at the age of 20. They had a good but hard life. Jenny will forever remember you and all the good times shared together. Rest in peace in the most beautiful land they ever set their sole on.

It's always greener on the green side

Compared to the Gobi, this time around we hit the area around Jalman Meadows. And yes, this area was just that; huge, vast meadows for our new strong horses to play around in. We also got some new guys to our gang, for example our new local horseguide, Tomro - "The Iron man" (he's strong and cocky). A sweet change was that we this time were all alone with just one guide when we were traversing the steppes of Mongolia.

Plus! We had the best setting for a toilet we've ever seen (above).

Meat in a box

Meatinabox_color

A pleasant surprise and break from the horseback riding one afternoon was having a picnic with some army guys, their families and eight big army buses in the middle of nowhere. As soon as we got of our horses we got offered some tea (always that one with salt in it) and some meat in a box. Just another ordinary day.

Oh yeah, they were picking up 200 people (!) that we later ran into having an very elaborate office party even more in the middle of nowhere, complete with tents, a soundsystem and ponchos.

Maybe a bit too homesick

As we begun our second horseriding trek in Mongolia, the yaks and cows pulling our camp reminded Per of a well known (in Sweden at least) dairy product.

A break from the countryside

(download)
When we finished dusting our shoes off, mongolmassaged some sour muscles and changed into some non horsesmelling clothes it was nice with a small break and take in some mongolian city life. It's an interesting town Ulaan Bataar, as in the rest of the country there's some big spaces to fill, including some really vast squares (apparently great for tandem bikes and inlines).

Everything comes to an end

Sadness; last day in Gobi. At least it was a good thing we still had some time left in Mongolia. Another horse trek was soon about to begin.

Lets sum it up

Gobi was awesome. There's nothing else to say. To sum up our visit we let everyone draw each other in our diary. It ended up with alot of laughter, and even tears.

Massive happiness in massive dunes

To galopp in the sand dunes. To galopp in the sand dunes. To galopp in the sand dunes! It's totally worth repeating over and over.
